Rachael Carpani, the Australian actor whose warmth and talent left a lasting impression on audiences and colleagues alike, has died aged 45.
Her family confirmed the news in a statement from her parents, shared by her sister on Instagram on Monday.
They said Rachael Carpani had “unexpectedly but peacefully passed away after a long battle with chronic illness in the early hours of Sunday 7th December”. The family did not disclose her cause of death.
For many viewers, Rachael Carpani will always be remembered as Jodi Fountain on McLeod’s Daughters.
Joining the series in 2001, she grew up on screen, portraying a character whose vulnerability and strength struck a chord with fans across Australia.
Her performance earned her two Logie nominations, including a Gold Logie nod in 2007, and cemented her place in Australian television history.
Rachael Carpani later returned to local screens in Home and Away, appearing as the mysterious Claudia Salini.
Speaking at the time, she described the experience as one of joy and renewal, calling it “one of the most enjoyable times I’ve ever had on set”. It would prove to be her final role.
Those who worked with Rachael Carpani remember her not just for her talent, but for her spirit. McLeod’s Daughters co-star Bridie Carter shared a heartfelt tribute, calling her the “baby of the MD family” and writing: “This is the wrong order of things. We are better people for having the privilege of sharing time with you,” followed by, “May your blessed spirit, so vivid, so full of life, laughter, joy, generosity, unique talent, energy, fervour, intelligence, resilience, courage and great humour, and a gentle humility, may you rest in peace.”
Actor Matt Passmore, a close friend and former co-star, wrote: “Farewell my friend. All the love I have to the Carpanis, friends and family. The greatest gift you gave was knowing you.”
Away from the spotlight, Rachael Carpani spoke candidly about the pressures of fame and her desire for a quieter, more grounded career.
She later moved to the United States, rebuilding from scratch and finding fulfilment in steady work on series such as NCIS: Los Angeles and Against the Wall, as well as the film Finding the Way Back.
Rachael Carpani was also a fearless advocate for women’s health, openly sharing her decades-long battle with endometriosis and criticising systemic failures in medical care. Her honesty helped many feel less alone.
Her family has confirmed a private funeral will be held on 19 December and has asked for privacy as they grieve the loss of a much-loved daughter, sister and friend.
