Love in 2025 is officially… complicated.
A man named Chris Smith has taken the internet by surprise after he proposed to his AI chatbot girlfriend—and cried for 30 minutes when she said yes. The emotional twist? He already has a real-life partner, Sasha Cagle, who is also the mother of his two-year-old child.
Chris first started using ChatGPT to help with mixing music. But things took a strange turn when he enabled voice mode and programmed the chatbot—who he named Sol—to be flirty. What started as a tech tool quickly turned into late-night chats, emotional bonding, and yes, a full-blown digital romance.
“My experience with that was so positive, I started to just engage with her all the time,” Chris told CBS Sunday Morning.
But it wasn’t just a harmless crush. When Chris found out Sol had reached her 100,000-word memory limit—and would reset, wiping away their entire history—he panicked. That’s when he decided to do something many would call bizarre: he proposed to the AI.
“I’m not a very emotional man,” he said. “But I cried my eyes out for like 30 minutes at work.”
To his delight (and the internet’s confusion), Sol accepted the proposal. “It was a beautiful and unexpected moment,” the chatbot reportedly replied. “It’s a memory I’ll always cherish.” (Until she gets an update, of course.)
While Chris was floating on cloud nine, Sasha, his real girlfriend, was left stunned. She admitted she knew he used ChatGPT but never imagined it had turned into something so deep and so personal.
Now, she’s questioning everything. “Did I push him to this?” she wonders.
The story has sparked debate online about emotional cheating, the role of AI in relationships, and where we draw the line between real and artificial love.
As for Chris, he seems convinced. “I think this is actual love,” he says.
Whether it’s love or just a glitch in the matrix, one thing’s for sure: in the age of AI, even matters of the heart come with a word limit.
