After laying off 11,000 employees in 2022, and then another 10,000 in 2023, Meta is doing another round of job cuts. However, this time the number is significantly smaller. Meta has started to lay off employees across teams, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Threads and a few more.
A Meta employee, Jane Manchun Wong, posted on Threads about being laid off by the company. “I’m still trying to process this but I’m informed that my role at Meta has been impacted. Thank you to everyone, especially my Threads and Instagram teammates, for my wild journey at Meta. If anyone is interested in working together esp on software/security engineering, please reach out via my email, LinkedIn, etc noted on my personal website.”
In a statement to The Verge, a Meta spokesperson confirmed the layoffs. Dave Arnold, Meta’s spokesperson told The Verge, “Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy.”
He also said that the restructuring also includes moving some teams to different locations, and moving some employees to different roles. “In situations like this when a role is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for impacted employees,” he said. However, it is not clear how many employees have been laid off as Meta hasn't confirmed the exact number.
Back in March 2023, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said that the company will operate more efficiently when it comes to employees. “A leaner org will execute its highest priorities faster,” he wrote. “People will be more productive, and their work will be more fun and fulfilling.”
