OpenAI is reportedly working on turning ChatGPT into not just a smart assistant, but also help users with online shopping. According to a report by Tech Radar, unreleased code discovered by Testing Catalog suggests Shopify is prepping a direct integration into ChatGPT’s interface. As per the report, this could allow users to browse, compare, and even purchase products from Shopify merchants without ever leaving the chat window.
The leaked features outline a smooth, embedded shopping experience. Users can ask ChatGPT for the best trail running sneakers, for instance, and instead of getting links to review sites or retailer pages, you could soon see a curated list of products—complete with prices, ratings, shipping details, and a “Buy Now” button. Tap that button, and the purchase happens right there, inside the chat.
For Shopify, this could be a big deal as its products could land directly in front of ChatGPT’s 800 million users, potentially converting a casual query into a completed transaction in seconds.
The move is part of a broader trend toward “agentic commerce,” where AI agents not only guide your choices but also complete tasks for you. OpenAI isn’t alone here—Microsoft’s Copilot Merchant Program and Perplexity’s “Buy with Pro” are eyeing similar territory.
For users, the appeal is convenience. Instead of bouncing between sites, digging through reviews, and re-entering payment info, the entire journey—from discovery to checkout—happens in one place. ChatGPT won’t just help you decide what to buy. It may end up helping you buy it.
While the feature isn’t officially live yet, parts of the code already are—hinting that OpenAI’s push into e-commerce might be closer than expected.
