Apple in talks with Bharat Forge to make the firm its India vendor, says report

At present, Apple has three iPhone assembly plants in India, the largest is run by Foxconn in Tamil Nadu. The other two are Tata Group units in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka

    Apple is in talks with Bharat Forge to make the Kalyani Group company one of its vendors in India, The Economic Times has reported. If an agreement is reached, Bharat Forge will make components for the iPhone maker in India.

    Bharat Forge will them be the latest Indian company to work with Apple after the Tata Group. Apple has three iPhone assembly plants in India, the largest of them is run by Foxconn in Tamil Nadu. The other two are Tata Group units in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

    "Apple is looking to work with some of the biggest Indian companies and talks have commenced with Bharat Forge, located in Pune, Maharashtra," the report quoted one of the sources as saying.

    Apple is focused on iPhone enclosures and is expected that local suppliers will be onboarded over the next year, in addition to the Tata unit in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, the report said.

    Moneycontrol couldn’t verify the report independently.

    As reported by Moneycontrol earlier this month, Apple has secured its place among India's top five smartphone brands for the first time since it started selling iPhones in the country. It recently fastened its pace and has increased production of iPhones in India.

    Bharat Forge, which is part of the Kalyani Group, is manufactures and sells forged components for railway, automotive, power and other industrial sectors.

    At 10.25 am, the Bharat Forge stock was trading at Rs 1,186.6 on the National Stock Exchange, down 2.46 percent from the previous close, mirroring the large market trend. Benchmark indices the Sensex and the Nifty were trading almost a percent down in the morning trade.

    The Bharat Forge stock is around 35 percent down from its 52-week-high of Rs 1,826.20.
