India had fielded a 117-member contingent (in 16 sports disciplines, comprising of 70 men and 47 women) for the Games in Paris and returned with six medals. Manu Bhaker, India's shooting sensation, won two out of the six. The pistol shooter produced a tremendous show, especially after the debacle in Tokyo, winning bronze in 10m individual and mixed team event. Manu had combined with Sarabjot Singh to upstage the Koreans and return with a bronze in the mixed team event.
Apart from them, Swapnil Kusale was the third shooter to deliver the country a medal. Swapnil also bagged a bronze, which came in the finals of three positions rifle event. While these were the medals in shooting, India's most decorated athlete Neeraj Chopra returned with a silver in men's javelin. This was Neeraj's second medal at the Olympics in consecutive editions.
The Indian men's hockey team also showed great resilience throughout the course of the event and finished third to win bronze. Harmanpreet Singh, the skipper, led the unit from front and scored ten goals in the eight matches India played. PR Sreejesh, who retired with an Olympic bronze, was also exceptional between the sticks and was India's joint flagbearer with Manu at the closing ceremony.

With wrestlers failing to make an impact, Aman Sehrawat had big responsibility of carrying forward India's streak of winning a medal in the discipline at the Summer Games since 2008. The 21-year-old lived up to the expectations and clinched a bronze to become the youngest Indian medallist at the Olympic Games. Vinesh Phogat, who was assured of at least a silver, was disqualified on the morning of her final bout in women's 50kg freestyle wrestling. She, however, has appealed for a joint silver to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) and a verdict is expected to be delivered on August 16.
