MS Dhoni is well-known for assisting cricketers from around the world. However, there was a time when he chose not to help a bowler. Harbhajan Singh recounted an incident when Dhoni declined to offer guidance to Shardul Thakur at Chennai Super Kings during an IPL match.
Shardul Thakur played for CSK from 2018 to 2021, while Harbhajan was with the team for three years. According to Harbhajan, Dhoni was always available to bowlers but preferred that they learn from their own mistakes rather than being given direct assistance. When situations became critical, Dhoni would step in to address the issue.
“We were playing for CSK, and I was fielding at short fine leg. Shardul Thakur had been hit for boundaries by Kane Williamson, and I went to Dhoni, asking him to advise the bowler to alter his length,” Harbhajan recalled in a conversation with former India Under-19 player Taruwar Kohli.
“MS Dhoni said that if he helped him today, Shardul would never learn. Dhoni wanted Shardul to figure it out on his own because he believed that this approach would help him understand things more quickly. That was Dhoni’s way.”
Harbhajan, who played alongside Dhoni for a long period, including with the Indian team, highlighted Dhoni’s calm demeanour and clear focus on team goals. “Dhoni is calm and knows what he wants. His ability to win games reflects positively on the team. Dhoni doesn’t focus on individual achievements; the team’s success is more important to him. CSK is a special team, and the atmosphere remains unchanged regardless of winning or losing.”
Beyond Dhoni’s leadership on the field, his role in fostering a positive team environment was crucial. The players enjoyed a stress-free atmosphere, and the equal treatment of all members further enhanced team morale and camaraderie. “He [Dhoni] ensures a great team environment is maintained. No one is treated as a star or a junior. What he has done matters. He always prioritised team goals over individual accolades. I think that’s what made CSK a special team. The dressing room – win or lose – remains the same. It’s one of those rare qualities. You don’t feel the pressure of the next match; it’s that relaxed. As long as you give your best, that’s what counts. Learn and move forward,” he added.
