Shreyas Iyer's return to Indian setup for the first time since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where he played a key role, ended in a major injury concern. The right-handed batter, who was elevated as the team's new vice-captain in the ODI format, sustained an "impact injury to his left lower rib cage region" while fielding during the third and final ODI against Australia in Sydney.

The injury took place when Iyer fielding at backward point and he ran backwards before plunging into a dive to complete a superb catch to dismiss wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey. While he managed to get the batter out by putting his body on the line, the effort left him with a serious injury forcing him to get hospitalised in Sydney.

Report emerged of Iyer sent into ICU due to internal bleeding and subsequently BCCI has released an official word on his status.

"Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

"Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress," the official statement by BCCI read.

Iyer had left the field after the injury and was not required to bat in the 237 chase, courtesy to a match-winning 168 off 169 partnership between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Rohit smashed his 33rd ODI ton in the process and returned unbeaten on 121 (125), while Kohli contributed 74* off 81 balls. The knock by Kohli also helped him surpass Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara and he is now the second highest run-scorer in ODIs overall, only behind his idol Sachin Tendulkar.

Iyer, on the other hand, mustered 72 runs from two innings, with 61 off 77 balls in the second ODI in Adelaide being his highest-score. He is not part of the five-match T20I squad, which starts from October 29 in Canberra.
