The Polaris Dawn mission made history on Wednesday by surpassing the Apollo program's reach. For the first time since Apollo, a crewed spacecraft ventured beyond Earth’s usual orbit, passing through the Van Allen radiation belts.

Understanding the Van Allen Belts

Discovered in 1958 by physicist James Van Allen, the Van Allen belts are regions of intense radiation surrounding Earth, held by its magnetic field. These belts consist of two main zones: the inner belt, from 1,000 to 6,000 kilometres above Earth, and the outer belt, from 13,000 to 60,000 kilometres. The inner belt is dominated by energetic protons, while the outer belt contains high-energy electrons from the Sun.

Navigating Radiation Risks and Future Exploration

Traversing these belts poses significant challenges. High-energy particles can damage spacecraft electronics and pose health risks to astronauts. The Polaris Dawn mission reached an altitude of about 1,400 kilometres, exposing the crew to higher radiation levels than in low Earth orbit.

To address these challenges, advanced shielding techniques were employed, and mission trajectories were carefully planned to minimise exposure time. Monitoring of astronaut radiation levels ensured their safety.

This mission is a crucial step for future space exploration. It provides valuable data on radiation effects, essential for missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The Polaris Dawn mission marks a significant advancement in human spaceflight, pushing the boundaries of our cosmic exploration.
