A rare polar bear spotted in Iceland after eight years caused alarm among residents. Spotted near a cottage, it was deemed a threat. Authorities decided to act swiftly to ensure safety.

The polar bear was killed on Thursday afternoon. Police consulted the Environment Agency before taking action. According to Westfjords Police Chief Helgi Jensson, relocation was not an option.

The bear approached a summer house, alarming the resident. An elderly woman was inside, frightened by the animal rummaging through her garbage. She contacted her daughter in Reykjavik for help.

Rare Sightings and Their Implications

This bear was the first seen in Iceland since 2016. Historically, only 600 sightings have been recorded since the ninth century. While polar bears are protected, they can be killed if they pose a danger to humans.

Aftermath and Research

The bear’s pelt and skull may be preserved for research. A Coast Guard helicopter searched the area for other bears but found none.

After the incident, the frightened resident chose to extend her stay in the village. Authorities remain vigilant in protecting both residents and wildlife.
