Vaikuntha Chaturdashi holds great spiritual importance as it is the only day when Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are worshipped together. This rare occasion symbolizes the divine unity between the two supreme deities of Sanatan Dharma. Falling on the Shukla Paksha Chaturdashi of the Kartik month, it is believed that both gods bless devotees with prosperity, peace, and liberation.
Legend of Lord Vishnu’s Thousand Lotuses
According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Vishnu once visited Varanasi to worship Lord Shiva on Kartik Chaturdashi. He offered a thousand lotus flowers to Mahadev. When one flower went missing, Lord Vishnu, known as ‘Kamalnayan,’ plucked one of His eyes (resembling a lotus) and offered it to Shiva to complete His prayer. Deeply moved by such devotion, Lord Shiva restored Vishnu’s eye and granted Him the powerful Sudarshana Chakra, symbolizing divine protection and righteousness.
Puja Timings and Rituals
On this auspicious day, Lord Vishnu is worshipped during Nishitha Kaal (midnight), while Lord Shiva is revered during Arunodaya (dawn). Devotees of Vishnu chant the Vishnu Sahasranama and offer a thousand lotuses during the puja. Meanwhile, Shiva devotees take the sacred Manikarnika Snan (a holy bath at Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi) which is believed to purify the soul and grant divine blessings.
Celebrations in Temples
Vaikuntha Chaturdashi is celebrated with grandeur at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, where Lord Vishnu is given a special place beside Lord Shiva in the sanctum. It is believed that on this day, Kashi becomes as sacred as Vaikuntha, the abode of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu offers Tulsi leaves to Lord Shiva, and in return, Lord Shiva offers Bael leaves to Vishnu - symbolizing mutual respect and divine harmony.
Apart from Varanasi, the festival is also observed in Rishikesh, Gaya, Nashik, and various parts of Maharashtra, where devotees perform night-long bhajans, lighting diyas and offering prayers for spiritual elevation.
Connection with Dev Deepavali and Kartik Purnima
The celebration of Vaikuntha Chaturdashi is followed by Dev Deepavali, the “Festival of Lights of the Gods,” which marks the descent of celestial beings to the Ganga to bathe in its holy waters. The entire ghats of Varanasi glow with millions of diyas, making it a breathtaking spiritual spectacle. The following day, Kartik Purnima, is also considered highly auspicious for performing pujas, taking holy baths, and offering donations.
Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2025 marks a divine union of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, celebrated with faith and devotion across India. Observing this sacred day with sincerity is believed to remove sins, bring prosperity, and lead the soul toward the ultimate goal - moksha (salvation).
