Vaikasi Visakam 2025: Special Prayers Offered to Lord Murugan at Madurai Temples in Tamil Nadu

Thousands of devotees gathered in Tamil Nadu to celebrate Vaikasi Visakam 2025, one of the most significant festivals dedicated to Lord Murugan, also known as Kartikeya or Subramanya. The grand celebrations took place across the state, especially at the famous temples in Madurai and Tiruchendur, where special rituals, processions, and prayers marked the auspicious occasion.

Vaikasi Visakam is celebrated in the Tamil month of Vaikasi when the Visakam Nakshatram (star) coincides with the full moon. It marks the divine birth of Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, who is believed to have been born to destroy the demon Tarkasura. The festival holds immense importance in Tamil culture and Hindu traditions, especially in South India, where Murugan is widely worshipped as the god of war, wisdom, and victory.

In Madurai, the celebrations were vibrant and deeply spiritual. Devotees thronged Murugan temples in large numbers, participating in rituals like Abhishekam (holy bath), Alankaram (decoration of the deity), and special poojas. The main attraction was the procession of Lord Murugan’s idol, taken out in beautifully decorated chariots accompanied by devotional music and chanting. Many devotees observed fasts, offered milk in kavadi (a traditional act of devotion), and prayed for blessings, good health, and the fulfillment of wishes.

One devotee said, “We’ve been coming here for over a decade, carrying jugs of milk for Murugan. Whatever we ask, He blesses us, and we continue this offering every Visakam.” At the Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy Temple in Thoothukudi, the celebrations drew huge crowds. Devotees dressed in traditional attire performed cultural dances and participated in the rituals, creating a vibrant, spiritual atmosphere.

The Vaikasi Visakam festival spans ten days, each marked by unique processions and rituals. It is a time of deep devotion, spiritual reflection, and cultural celebration. The event highlights Lord Murugan’s role as a divine protector and destroyer of evil. In 2020, the festival was cancelled due to the pandemic, but with normalcy restored, 2025 saw a grand resurgence of faith and festivity.
