Why is Shani Jayanti Celebrated?

Shani Jayanti holds great spiritual significance. On this day, devotees observe fasts (Upvaas) and offer special prayers at Shani temples. Many perform rituals like Shani Tailabhishekam (oil offering), Shani Shanti Puja, Havan, and Yagya to appease Lord Shani. These rituals are especially recommended for those facing obstacles due to Shani Dosha or Sade Sati in their horoscope.

Devotees believe that worshipping Lord Shani on this day can remove the effects of bad karma, ease life struggles, and bring good fortune. It’s said that without Shani’s blessings, one may not receive the results of their hard work, no matter how much effort they put in.

Significance of Shani Jayanti

Shani Jayanti holds deep spiritual importance as it celebrates the birth of Lord Shani, the son of Lord Surya (Sun God). Known as the lord of karma and discipline, Lord Shani is believed to deliver justice based on one’s actions. He is both feared and revered for his strict but fair influence on people’s lives.

On this day, devotees observe fasts, perform special pujas, and visit Shani temples to seek blessings and protection from Shani Dosha, especially Sade Sati—a seven-and-a-half-year phase believed to bring challenges and delays in life. Appeasing Lord Shani on this day is said to bring relief from obstacles, financial difficulties, and prolonged hardships.

Devotees begin the day with an early bath and offer prayers to Lord Shani. Here are some common rituals observed:

  • Fasting (Upvaas): Devotees observe a day-long fast, breaking it only after sunset or after performing the puja.
  • Tailabhishekam: One of the key rituals includes an oil (til oil) abhishekam or sacred bath offered to Lord Shani’s idol.
  • Shani Shanti Puja: This puja is performed to pacify planetary afflictions caused by Saturn in one’s horoscope.
  • Havan and Homam: Sacred fire rituals like Shani Homam or Yagya are conducted to reduce the ill effects of Saturn and seek divine blessings.
  • Chanting and Offerings: Devotees chant Shani mantras, offer black sesame seeds, mustard oil, black clothes, and light oil lamps.
Shani Jayanti and Vat Savitri Vrat

In many parts of North India, Shani Jayanti coincides with Vat Savitri Vrat, a sacred fast observed by married women for the long life of their husbands. Both occasions fall on Jyeshtha Amavasya, making the day spiritually powerful and important for performing religious duties and seeking divine blessings.
