Sawan Shivaratri, also known as Shravan Shivaratri, is a significant day dedicated to Lord Shiva. It falls during the Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of the holy Shravana month. While there are twelve Shivaratris observed annually (one in each lunar month), Sawan Shivaratri holds special importance as it comes during the month wholly devoted to Shiva worship. Sawan Shivaratri will be observed on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

Importance of Sawan Shivaratri

Devotees observe Masik Shivaratri fast every month, but the one during Shravan is considered especially powerful. The entire month of Sawan is sacred to Shiva, and observing Shivaratri during this period is believed to bring blessings of health, peace, and spiritual growth. Temples like Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi and Badrinath Dham witness a surge of devotees during this month. Pilgrims offer Gangajal Abhishekam to the Shiva Linga as a mark of devotion.

Regional Observance

Sawan Shivaratri is most popularly celebrated in North Indian states like Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab, where the Purnimanta calendar is followed. In South and Western states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, where the Amanta calendar is used, this same observance corresponds with Ashadha Shivaratri.

How to Observe Sawan Shivaratri Vrat?

Sawan Shivaratri Vrat Vidhi is quite structured and meaningful:

  • One Day Before (Trayodashi): Eat only once. This is called Ekabhukti.
  • On Vrat Day (Chaturdashi): Perform morning rituals and take Sankalp, a vow to fast and worship Shiva.
  • Evening Bath: Take a second bath before performing the Shivaratri Puja.
  • Night Worship: Offer prayers during Nishita Kaal—the midnight hour.
  • Parana (Breaking the Fast): Break your fast on the next day after sunrise but within Chaturdashi Tithi for full benefits.

Some scriptures suggest breaking the fast after Chaturdashi ends, but most believe both Puja and Parana should occur within Chaturdashi. Fasting and performing Shiva Puja on Sawan Shivaratri is said to remove sins, fulfill desires, and help devotees receive divine grace. The rituals are a blend of discipline, devotion, and deep inner connection with Lord Shiva.
