Vasant Panchami, also known as Saraswati Jayanti, celebrates the birth anniversary of Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, wisdom, and learning. Similar to how Diwali is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and Navratri honours Goddess Durga, Vasant Panchami holds special significance for the worship of Goddess Saraswati. This year it will be celebrated on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
On this auspicious day, devotees perform Saraswati Puja during the Purvahna period, which is the time before midday according to the Hindu division of the day. The deity is adorned with white clothes and flowers, symbolising purity and wisdom. Offerings typically include sweets made from milk and white sesame, which are later distributed as prasad among family and friends. In northern India, yellow flowers, such as mustard blossoms and marigolds, are prominently offered to the goddess to reflect the abundance of these blooms during this time.
The day is also significant for Vidya Arambha, a ceremony marking the initiation of young children into formal education. Many schools and colleges conduct Saraswati Puja on this day to seek the goddess's blessings.
While "Vasant Panchami" refers to the Indian spring season, it does not always coincide with the actual season of spring. Therefore, other names like Shri Panchami or Saraswati Puja are considered more accurate for this festival.
