Located near Thiruvalangadu, the serene village of Manavur houses the spiritually revered Nandishwarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Rich in legends and ancient Tamil traditions, this temple is considered a divine replica or "clone" of deeper Shaivite faith where Lord Shiva is believed to have granted moksha (liberation) to Nandi, His devoted vahana (bull). The temple is a treasure of history, art, and devotion — making it one of the must-visit Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu.

As per ancient Tamil lore:

"Adiyadhu Alangatil; Amarndadu Thiruvuralil; Manandadu Manavuril" — meaning Lord Shiva danced in Thiruvalangadu, rested in Thiruvural (Kuvam), and got married in Manavur. At Manavur, Sage Agastya is said to have witnessed Lord Shiva’s divine wedding with Goddess Parvati, hence the name ‘Manavur’ from "manam" (marriage). According to the Sthala Puranam, Nandi created a sacred tank, bathed, worshipped the Shiva Linga here, and attained moksha, making this temple profoundly sacred.

Architectural Highlights and Sacred Features

  • The temple's main entrance is from the south, adorned with a stately gopuram leading into a spacious prakaram (enclosure).
  • The sanctum sanctorum faces east, where the Linga is worshipped as Lord Nandishwarar.
  • Just outside lies the sacred tank ‘Nandi Tirtham’, where Nandi is believed to have performed his penance.
  • A special architectural feature includes a small peephole in the sanctum’s east wall, allowing the idol of Nandi, placed outside, a view of Lord Shiva.

Deities in the Inner Prakaram

Apart from the main shrine of Lord Shiva and Goddess Anandavalli Amman, the temple houses idols of:

  • Kali Matha
  • Ganesha
  • Gajalakshmi
  • Lord Subramanya
  • Lord Bhairava
  • Suryanarayana
  • Chandikeshwara

Each deity adds to the temple’s spiritual richness, allowing devotees to offer worship in a holistic Shaivite tradition.

Festivals and Celebrations at Nandishwarar Temple

The temple celebrates several important Shaivite festivals, the most notable being:

  • Brahmotsavam in the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May–June)
  • Chitra Pournami, a full moon celebration held in April–May, dedicated to Goddess Anandavalli Amman
  • These festivals draw large gatherings of devotees and are marked by rituals, processions, and cultural performances.

Numerous Chola-era inscriptions found on the outer walls reveal that Manavur was part of the ancient territorial division Manavir Kottam. These stone records shed light on the temple’s antiquity and the continuous patronage it received from various dynasties.
