Why is Nag Panchami Celebrated?

Observed on Shukla Paksha Panchami during Sawan, Nag Panchami holds deep spiritual meaning in Hindu tradition. Devotees worship Nag Devtas (serpent gods), offering prayers and milk to snakes. This ritual is believed to bring protection, prosperity, and blessings for family well-being. Women especially pray for the health and longevity of their brothers and loved ones.

Worshipping Serpent Gods: Importance

According to Hindu scriptures, worshipping snakes on this day reaches the divine serpent gods directly. The most revered among them include:
Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padma, Kambala, Karkotaka, Ashvatara, Dhritarashtra, Shankhapala, Kaliya, Takshaka, and Pingala. Offering prayers to these deities is said to protect devotees from negative energies, remove obstacles, and bring victory in life.

Nag Panchami Mantras for Protection

Devotees chant these sacred mantras to seek blessings and protection:

Regional Variations of Nag Panchami
  • Nag Chaturthi: Observed a day before Nag Panchami, where devotees fast to honor Nag Devtas. Known as Nagul Chavithi in Andhra Pradesh, it coincides with the Soora Samharam festival in Tamil Nadu.
  • Nag Pancham in Gujarat: Celebrated 15 days later than other states, during Krishna Paksha Panchami of Shravan month, just before Krishna Janmashtami.
  • Bola Choth (Bahula Chauth): In Gujarat, celebrated a day before Nag Pancham, where cows and cattle are worshipped for prosperity and blessings.
Significance of Nag Panchami

Nag Panchami symbolizes respect for nature, protection from negative forces, and harmony with all living beings. It is also associated with stories of Lord Krishna subduing Kaliya Naag and symbolizes victory over evil. Devotees believe that observing this day brings prosperity, safety from snake bites, and spiritual growth.
