Guwahati, June 26: The revered Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam reopened its doors to devotees early Thursday morning, following the conclusion of the annual Ambubachi Mela 2025. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya, resumed public darshan after the completion of Nivriti (closure period) at 6 AM.
According to the main priest, Himadri Sarma, the temple administration ensured smooth conduct of the Ambubachi rituals and seamless arrangements for the reopening day. Thousands of devotees had been waiting eagerly for this day, as the Ambubachi Mela marks a spiritually significant period for worshippers of Shakti.
What is Ambubachi Mela?
The Ambubachi Mela is one of Assam's most revered Hindu festivals, celebrated at the Kamakhya Temple atop the Nilachal Hills. The festival symbolizes the annual menstruation cycle of Goddess Kamakhya, who represents the divine feminine energy. The temple remains closed for three days during this period, after which it reopens on the fourth day for darshan. This year, the temple was closed on 22nd June 2025 and reopened on 26th June, following traditional Prabritti and Nivriti rituals.
Devotees and Dignitaries Visit Kamakhya Temple
Among the early visitors was Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who, along with his wife, offered prayers to Maa Kamakhya. Speaking to the media, the Governor said, “I prayed for a Viksit Bharat and strength for Prime Minister Modi to continue the nation's development.” He also appreciated the arrangements made for smooth and safe darshan for devotees.
Significance of Kamakhya Temple
The Kamakhya Temple is not only a Shakti Peetha but also a major center for Tantric practices. It is one of the oldest among the 51 Shakti Peethas in India. Thousands of pilgrims from across India and abroad visit the shrine during the Ambubachi Mela each year. Apart from the Ambubachi Mela, the temple also hosts major rituals and festivals such as Durga Puja, Vasanti Puja, Manasa Puja, Durgadeul, and Madandeul.
The Ambubachi Mela is deeply rooted in spiritual symbolism, where the goddess’s period is seen not as impure but as a powerful natural phenomenon. It is a celebration of fertility, womanhood, and the energy that sustains the universe. The large turnout this year once again reflects the unwavering faith of devotees in Maa Kamakhya and their commitment to preserving ancient traditions.
