The Purnima Vrat, observed on the full moon (Purnima Tithi) of the Shukla Paksha every month, holds deep spiritual value in Hinduism. This year it will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. This sacred fast is particularly significant during the month of Jyeshtha, when devotees seek divine blessings for happiness, prosperity, and purity of the mind. On this day, Lord Vishnu, Lord Chandra (Moon God), and Lord Shiva are worshipped, and following traditional rituals is said to bring spiritual merit, cleanse sins, and ensure family welfare.

Jyeshtha Purnima Vrat Significance

The Bhavishya Purana mentions the Dvatrimshi Purnima Vrat, which begins on the full moon of Margashirsha, Magha, or Vaishakha and concludes on the Purnima of Bhadrapada or Pausha. Observing this 32-month fast is believed to bless the devotee with good fortune, children, and mental peace. Jyeshtha Purnima is also considered highly auspicious for the worship of Lord Chandra, who appears in His complete form on this day. Fasting and performing rituals today purifies the soul and strengthens one's connection with the divine.

Purnima Vrat Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step Ritual)

1. Morning Rituals and Sankalpa

  • Begin the day with a bath in a holy river, or bathe at home using Gangajal.
  • Perform Tarpan (ancestral offerings).
  • Take a Sankalpa (vow) to observe the fast for your family's well-being, peace, and success.
2. Deity Worship
  • Kalash Sthapana (placing the holy pot) is done first.
  • Offer prayers to Lord Ganesha, followed by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati using Shodashopachara Puja Vidhi (16-step worship).
  • Also worship Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Chandra.
  • Keep a full-day fast, meditate, chant mantras, and engage in devotional songs.
3. Evening Puja and Moon Worship
  • Offer Arghya (sacred water offering) to the Moon God after moonrise.
  • Listen to or recite the Purnima Vrat Katha.
  • Performing the Satyanarayana Katha is considered extremely auspicious.
What to Eat During Purnima Vrat?

The Purnima fasting food varies by region. Generally:

  • Devotees eat fruits, milk, and simple sattvic meals.
  • Some follow a Nirjala Vrat (water-only fast).
  • Avoid grains, spices, tea, coffee, and tobacco, as these are considered tamasic (impure).
Udyapana Vidhi of Purnima Vrat
  • Clean the place, draw a Chowk, and install a Kalash in the centre.
  • Place a bamboo container over the Kalash and install a gold idol of Uma-Maheshwara with a bull.
  • Perform Shodashopachara Puja and conduct a night of bhajans and vigil.
  • Perform Havan with Shiva Panchakshara Mantra and offer 108 Ahutis with barley, sesame, and ghee.
  • Donate thirty-two fruits, grains, and a lamp wrapped in cloth while chanting sacred verses.
  • Feed 32 Brahmins and 32 women with full meals including six types of gravies.
  • If possible, donate a cow or make a donation based on your means.
  • End the Havan with Purnahuti, and only then consume remaining food.

The Jyeshtha Purnima Upavasa is more than a ritual—it’s a pathway to spiritual refinement, family well-being, and inner peace. By observing the Purnima Vrat with devotion, performing the correct Puja Vidhi, and following traditional Udyapana, devotees invite divine grace into their lives.
