Krishna Janmashtami is one of the most awaited Hindu festivals, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna. Devotees who observe Janmashtami fast should take their last meal a day before the festival. The day-long fast is observed on Janmashtami itself, which falls on August 16, 2025. The fast is traditionally broken on the next day after both Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra have ended, usually after sunrise on August 17.

Some devotees break their fast as soon as either Ashtami Tithi or Rohini Nakshatra ends, while others wait until both conditions are met. The Sankalpa (vow) to fast is taken after morning rituals, and the fast continues through the day.

Fasting Rules on Janmashtami

No grains or food items containing grains are consumed during the fast, similar to Ekadashi fasting rules. Parana, or breaking the fast, should be done after sunrise when Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra have passed. If these conditions are not met before sunset or Hindu midnight, devotees should wait until they do, sometimes extending the fast to two full days.

Two Janmashtami Dates: Smarta vs Vaishnava Traditions

Janmashtami is often celebrated on two consecutive days based on Smarta and Vaishnava Sampradaya traditions. The Vaishnava Sampradaya, popularized by ISKCON, observes Janmashtami on the later date (August 16, 2025) and places high importance on Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra.

Smarta Sampradaya follows more complex rules, prioritizing Nishita Kaal and the presence of Ashtami Tithi during this midnight period. Smartas may celebrate Janmashtami on August 15 or 16 depending on these astrological calculations.

Importance of Correct Muhurat

Understanding and following the correct fasting date and puja timings according to your tradition is important for observing Krishna Janmashtami with proper devotion. Whether you follow the Smarta or Vaishnava path, aligning your rituals with the precise muhurat ensures maximum spiritual benefits.
