In a major development for Indian Muslims hoping to perform the Hajj pilgrimage in 2025, Saudi Arabia has agreed to increase its quota by allowing an additional 10,000 Indian pilgrims to participate. This decision was made possible after India intervened to prevent the cancellation of certain Combined Hajj Group Organisers' (CHGOs) allotted zones, which had faced delays in meeting important deadlines for arrangements in Mina.
Challenges in Mina Arrangements
The Hajj Committee of India was allocated responsibility for 70% of the 1,75,025 initial slots for Indian pilgrims in 2025, with the remaining 30% managed by private CHGOs. However, several CHGOs struggled to meet the Saudi authorities’ deadlines due to delays in finalising contracts for Mina camps, lodging, and transportation services. As a result, almost 52,000 Indian pilgrims faced the possibility of missing out on the pilgrimage.
Government's Swift Action
Recognising the gravity of the situation, the Ministry of Minority Affairs (MoMA) acted quickly by directing the CHGOs to accelerate their preparations. Indian officials also collaborated closely with their Saudi counterparts to find a solution. As part of the efforts, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj agreed to reopen the Nusuk portal, making it possible to accommodate an additional 10,000 pilgrims from India.
Preparations and Future Outlook
Looking ahead to the 2025 pilgrimage, Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, visited Saudi Arabia in January 2025. During his visit, he engaged in talks with Saudi officials and attended the first session of the Hajj and Umrah Conference and Exhibition, ensuring that preparations for Indian pilgrims would proceed smoothly.
The Hajj pilgrimage for 2025 is expected to take place between June 4 and June 9, depending on the moon sighting that marks the start of Zil-Hajj, the final month of the Islamic calendar. Pilgrims are likely to begin their journey to Saudi Arabia as early as late April.
The reopening of the Nusuk portal marks a significant step in facilitating the participation of more Indian pilgrims in the 2025 Hajj. This cooperation between Indian and Saudi authorities is expected to ensure a spiritually fulfilling and smooth experience for thousands of devotees. With both countries working together, the upcoming pilgrimage is set to be a memorable event for all involved.
