Significance of Garuda Panchami

Garuda Panchami celebrates Garuda, revered as Periya Tiruvadi, Pakshiraja, and Vishnuvahana, symbolizing courage, loyalty, and selfless devotion. According to sacred texts, Garuda was born to Vinita, the second wife of Sage Kashyapa, while Kadru, her co-wife, gave birth to a thousand snakes. Through his strength and courage, Garuda freed himself and his mother from servitude, winning the blessings of Lord Vishnu, who made him his eternal companion.

The festival especially resonates with mothers and sons, as women worship Garuda for their children’s health, long life, and protection from negative forces. It reflects the values of selfless love, family bonds, and divine protection.

Garuda is also believed to grant eight siddhis (spiritual powers), including invisibility and agility, making him a symbol of divine grace, knowledge, and resilience.

Rituals and Puja Vidhi

On Garuda Panchami, devotees begin with a sacred bath and prepare a clean space for worship at home or temples. A picture or idol of Garuda is placed, and offerings like turmeric, sandalwood, flowers, and incense are made.

Key rituals include:

  • Women, especially mothers, observe fasts and offer prayers for their children’s health and safety.
  • Drawing or sculpting images of Garuda and serpent deities using rice flour or coloured powders.
  • Offering Naivedyam like bananas, milk, jaggery, and flattened rice.
  • Lighting lamps and chanting mantras dedicated to Garuda and Lord Vishnu for divine blessings.
  • Observing Naga Chaturthi alongside in many households, where snake deities are also worshipped for family welfare.
  • Stories of Garuda’s courage and loyalty are narrated to children, inspiring them to follow his virtues. The day concludes with prasadam distribution and festive meals.
Why Garuda Panchami is Special?

Garuda Panchami is more than a day of worship, it’s a reminder of protection, strength, and devotion. By observing the rituals with faith, devotees believe they gain resilience, spiritual energy, and blessings for a harmonious life.
