Thousands of devotees gathered at the renowned Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Trichy on Friday, January 10 to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Vaikuntha Ekadasi 2025. The festival marked the ceremonial opening of the Paramapada Vaasal (Gate of Heaven) and featured a grand procession of the temple's revered deity, Lord Namperumal.

Grand Celebrations at Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple

The day began with devotees arriving early to witness the divine rituals. At approximately 4:15 am, Lord Namperumal, the temple's processional deity, emerged from the sanctum sanctorum adorned in resplendent gem-studded armor, a kilimaalai (parrot garland), and the iconic Pandian crown. The deity passed through sacred pathways, including the Rajamahendiran Thirusuttru (corridor), Naazhikettan Gateway, and Kulasekaran Suttru, as thousands chanted "Ranga Ranga Namperumal."

The procession paused briefly at the Vraja Nadhi Mandapam, where Vedic hymns were recited, adding to the spiritual fervor of the occasion. At 5:15 am, the Paramapatha Vaasal, also referred to as Sorgavaasal, was ceremoniously opened, symbolizing the gates of Vaikunta, the heavenly abode of Lord Vishnu.

Special Darshan and Rituals

After the opening of the Paramapatha Vaasal, the deity was taken to the Thousand Pillar Hall, where devotees were granted a special darshan. The sacred atmosphere resonated with fervent chants of "Ranga Ranga," as devotees sought blessings and participated in the auspicious rituals.

Vaikuntha Ekadasi Significance

Vaikuntha Ekadasi is one of the most significant festivals in the Hindu calendar, believed to be the day when the gates of Vaikunta (heaven) are open. Devotees observe fasting and prayers, seeking divine blessings for prosperity, peace, and spiritual growth. The festival holds special significance at the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, one of South India’s most revered temples, renowned for its rich traditions and cultural heritage.

The Paramapada Vaasal at the Perumal Temple in Tallakullam, Madurai, was also opened on this day, allowing devotees to experience similar spiritual fervor. The Mohini Alankaram procession, a highlight of the celebrations, showcased the temple’s unique cultural traditions and drew large crowds.
