Bathukamma Festival: History
Bathukamma means “Mother Goddess Come Alive” and honours Goddess Gauri, the embodiment of beauty, strength, and womanhood. As per legend, King Dhramangada and Queen Satyavati prayed for a child, and Goddess Lakshmi appeared as Princess Lakshmi in the Chola dynasty, blessing them with prosperity. Young unmarried women worship Bathukamma, seeking happiness and ideal life partners.

The Bathukamma festival highlights the cultural heritage of Telangana. Women worship Goddess Gauri, praying for the health and well-being of their families. The nine-day festival begins with preparation, houses are cleaned, decorated, and purified with cow dung and rice flour designs. Men gather seasonal flowers like marigold, chrysanthemum, and pumpkin blossoms. Women arrange these flowers in a conical structure called Bathukamma, topped with a pumpkin flower and turmeric, symbolising Goddess Gauri’s divine power.
Women dress in traditional sarees and young girls in Langa Oni. They sing folk songs and perform circle dances around Bathukamma, celebrating with devotion and joy. Traditional sweets like maleeda made of jaggery are prepared and shared among devotees.
The festival concludes with the immersion of Bathukammas in rivers or lakes, accompanied by prayers, sweets, and offerings. Married women exchange kumkum and turmeric, marking unity and sisterhood. Cultural performances, folk dances, and street dramas (jataras) add grandeur to the celebration.
