Goddess Bagalamukhi, also known as Peetambara and Brahmastra, is one of the ten Mahavidyas in Hinduism. She holds a powerful place among these goddesses and is often worshipped for victory, protection, and the ability to silence enemies. Her name is derived from the Sanskrit word “Valga,” meaning “to curb or control.” Over time, this word evolved into "Bagala."
Goddess Bagalamukhi is especially revered in the field of Tantra Sadhana. She is believed to possess the divine power to paralyze the enemy, stop the tongue of slanderers, and halt negative forces. Her worship is believed to bless devotees with success in legal matters, arguments, and competitions.
According to ancient scriptures, Lord Vishnu once performed severe penance to calm a devastating cyclone that threatened to destroy the earth. Pleased by his dedication, Goddess Mahatripura appeared and quelled the storm. Later, she emerged as Bagalamukhi from the sacred Haridra Sarovar (turmeric lake) in Saurashtra during the midnight of Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi. Though this event occurred on Chaturdashi, her Jayanti is celebrated on Vaishakha Shukla Ashtami, symbolizing the day of her divine revelation.
As per the lineage of divine knowledge, Lord Brahma practiced the Bagalamukhi Mahavidya and passed it down to the sages Sanaka and Sanatkumara, who then passed it to Narada and later to Sankhyayana Paramahansa. This tradition forms a sacred chain of seekers and spiritual masters who have worshipped the goddess over centuries.
Bagalamukhi is connected to the Kurma (tortoise) incarnation of Lord Vishnu, which emphasizes her strength and grounding energy. Worship of this goddess is considered highly effective in achieving Stambhana (stopping harmful forces) and Vashikaran (influencing or attracting power), making her important for both Tantrics and common devotees alike.
