Ashadhi Wari, Maharashtra’s grand spiritual tradition, has begun with full enthusiasm. Considered one of the most significant religious events in the state, the Wari brings together lakhs of Warkaris (devotees) in a journey of devotion, music, and unity. In 2025, the spiritual procession sees the palkhis (palanquins) of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj making their way to Pandharpur, the sacred town of Lord Vitthal.

Tukaram Maharaj’s Palkhi Left Dehu on June 18
As per the announced schedule, Sant Tukaram Maharaj’s palkhi departed from Dehu on June 18, 2025, amid chants of “Tukaram Tukaram” and the sound of traditional instruments. Despite some waterlogging on the palkhi route, Warkaris remain undeterred by weather challenges. The palkhi will halt today at Akurdi in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj’s Palkhi Leaves Today
Today, on June 19, 2025, Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj’s palkhi departs from Alandi, another major highlight of Ashadhi Wari. Alandi is witnessing a huge influx of devotees. As per tradition, Warkaris bathe in the holy Indrayani River before offering prayers. However, due to rising water levels in the Indrayani, concerns have been raised about devotees' safety and the continuity of rituals.

Palkhi Route Through Pune From June 20–23
Both palkhis will travel through Pune city from June 20 to June 23, with large crowds expected to gather along the route. Ashadhi Ekadashi, which marks the conclusion of the Wari, falls on July 6, 2025, when the palkhis will reach Pandharpur and the final darshan takes place.

Massive Police Deployment for Crowd Control

To manage the growing crowd and ensure security during the procession, Pune Police has deployed over 8,000 personnel, including:

  • 4 Additional Commissioners
  • 10 Deputy Commissioners
  • 20 Assistant Commissioners
  • 128 Police Inspectors
  • 513 Sub-Inspectors and Assistant Inspectors
  • 6,143 Police Officers
  • SRPF Company, QRT Teams, and 1,240 Home Guards

Authorities are committed to managing the traffic, crowd flow, and any emergencies during the procession.

Rising Indrayani River a Cause for ConcernAs Alandi sits on the banks of the Indrayani River, the increasing water level is raising safety concerns. The Warkaris’ age-old ritual of bathing in the river before darshan may get affected. If rainfall continues, routes around the riverbank could face submersion, though Warkaris are known for their unwavering faith and resilience.

Despite the monsoon challenges, the spirit of Ashadhi Wari remains high. Warkaris, chanting “Gyanoba Mauli Tukaram,” continue their journey toward Pandharpur. Their devotion rises above discomfort, reflecting the timeless faith that this centuries-old pilgrimage represents.
