Hyderabad, Telangana: The much-awaited 117th Bonalu Festival at the historic Sri Simhavahini Mahankali Temple in the Old City is set to begin on July 11, 2025, with grand traditional rituals and vibrant public participation. Known for its deep spiritual significance and cultural fervour, the 10-day festival will conclude on July 21 with the ceremonial Ghatam Procession, which will move from Lal Darwaza to Nayapul Bridge.

According to temple chairman B. Maruthi Yadav, the Telangana government has promised full support to ensure the smooth conduct of the event. “The festivities will be held in a grand manner, with arrangements in place for the comfort and safety of all devotees,” he stated.

The Bonalu celebrations, dedicated to Goddess Mahankali, draw thousands of devotees from across the region every year. The temple committee has confirmed that a massive turnout is expected this year, reflecting the strong devotional spirit and community unity. Bonalu, a traditional Hindu festival celebrated in Telangana, especially in Hyderabad, is marked by special pujas, the offering of Bonam (meal offerings) to the Goddess, and vibrant processions with drums, dances, and rituals.

At Sri Simhavahini Mahankali Temple, the festival begins with special poojas on the inaugural day. The most symbolic event, the Ghatam procession, where a decorated pot representing the deity is carried with devotion, marks the festival’s conclusion. This year, the Ghatam will be taken from Lal Darwaza to Nayapul Bridge on July 21.

The Sri Simhavahini Mahankali Devalayam is one of the prominent temples in Hyderabad, revered for its historical and spiritual importance. Celebrating Bonalu at this temple holds immense significance for devotees, as they seek the blessings of Goddess Mahankali for health, protection, and prosperity. As preparations begin, the Old City of Hyderabad is expected to come alive with colour, chants, and celebrations, showcasing the rich heritage of Telangana’s Bonalu Festival. With elaborate arrangements, state support, and enthusiastic devotees, the 117th Bonalu Utsavam promises to be a vibrant and unforgettable event.
