On the occasion of Diwali, the chief minister of Pakistan's Punjab province, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has announced that Rs 15,000 will be distributed among 1,400 Hindu families in the state.
Addressing a gathering, she said, "We are all Pakistanis, and Diwali symbolises peace, harmony, and love."
According to a local media report, the CM lit a lamp and participated in celebrations alongside drawing up a traditional Rangoli. She also interacted closely with Hindu women and distributed cheques of Rs 15,000 to 1,400 Hindu families.
She said, “I felt immense happiness lighting the Diwali lamp. It symbolises our unity as Pakistanis," the report added. She then cut a cake with the Hindu women.
Hindu Pandit Kashi Ram performed Diwali Rituals and made a special prayer for the development and stability of Pakistan, the report further stated.
Maryam Sharif, the daughter of Pakistan's three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, is the first woman to become the chief minister of Punjab.
