World Music Day, also known as Fête de la Musique, will be celebrated on June 21, 2024, uniting people around the globe through the universal language of music. History

The origins of World Music Day date back to 1982 in France. The initiative was the brainchild of Jack Lang, then French Minister of Culture, and Maurice Fleuret, a renowned composer and music journalist.

They envisioned a day dedicated to free and live music, encouraging amateur and professional musicians alike to take to the streets and perform. Their vision materialised on June 21, 1982, chosen to coincide with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. This inaugural event was a resounding success, setting the stage for an annual celebration across the world.

Significance

World Music Day is celebrated in more than 120 countries and the significance of this day extends beyond mere performance. It provides an opportunity for people of all ages, backgrounds, and musical preferences to engage in a shared experience, fostering a sense of community and mutual appreciation.

Events and Celebrations

Traditionally, World Music Day features a multitude of live performances in public spaces—parks, streets, and plazas—where musicians perform for free, embodying the event’s original spirit of accessibility and community.

In recent years, the celebration has also embraced digital platforms, allowing for virtual concerts and global participation.

There is no official theme for this year. Last year’s theme, ‘Music on the Intersections’, was a hit.
