A resident of Germany recently uncovered a hidden treasure as she tidied her house for Christmas. The unsuspecting woman stumbled upon a 2-year-old lottery ticket from February 2021, only to realize that she had won approximately $110,000 (Rs 91.59 lakh), as reported by local media in Magdeburg.
The unnamed winner, who had played the Lotterie Super 6 and stashed the ticket in a desk drawer, expressed her disbelief, stating, "It feels like rediscovering a forgotten treasure."
Having invested around $44 in playing the same six digits over four weeks, the resident now contemplates including a vacation in her plans.
Lottery officials were amazed to find the ticket in pristine condition when it was submitted for verification. More than $660,000 in winnings from 2021 remain unclaimed in Saxony-Anhalt, with officials urging winners to come forward before the December 31, 2024 deadline.
Lotto-Toto Sachsen-Anhalt director Stefan Ebert remarked, "This was the only six-figure winning amount that was currently open for such a long time," emphasizing the rarity of such occurrences.
Meanwhile, in New York, a Brooklyn man experienced his own stroke of luck in December. Having previously won $10 million playing the New York Lottery, he added another $10 million to his winnings with a scratch-off ticket.
