While speaking at Vishesh Sampark Abhiyan, an event hosted by Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal revealed what his father said when he told him about his startup idea. A video of the same also surfaced online.
Goyal was seen standing on the stage where Puri and Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, were also seated. “I started Zomato 16 years ago, in 2008. And, my dad at that time told me ‘Janta hai tera baap kaun hai (Do you know who your father is)?’ And, his point was, ‘You can’t do a startup’. I come from a small town in Punjab, that’s the background,” the CEO said.
“But, over the last 16 years, a lot has changed. Especially over the last seven, eight, ten years as well,” Goyal added about the startup climate in India and also thanked the government for bringing about the change.
"When I started up, my dad asked janta hain tera baap kaun hain?... Over the past 16 years, especially 7-10 yeras, the government has kept itself out of the way of startups... hope it continues," says #Zomato chief Deepinder GoyalVia @moneycontrolcom @chandrarsrikant pic.twitter.com/CcPll6TORP
