A 21-year-old Brazilian student unwittingly partied for four days, blissfully ignorant of a bullet lodged in his head. The bizarre incident occurred during New Year's Eve celebrations in Rio de Janeiro, where what Mateus Facio initially dismissed as a stone impact turned out to be a life-threatening injury.
Facio, reveling with friends on a beach in Cabo Frio east of Rio de Janeiro, initially mistook the gunshot for a stone hitting his head. Dismissing the incident after the bleeding stopped, he continued to enjoy the festivities, completely oblivious to the danger lurking within.
Only when his right arm started spasming four days and got 'droopy' later did Facio seek medical assistance.
Neurosurgeon Flavio Falcometa, who performed the operation, revealed the gravity of the situation, telling DailyMail, "Part of the bullet penetrated his brain, causing compression and leading to his arm's involuntary movements.
If it had deviated a few millimeters, the consequences could have been far more severe." Facio astounded medical professionals, projecting a 20 to 30-day recovery period.
As Facio recounted his experience to Brazilian TV show Jornal Nacional, the police initiated an investigation to trace the origins of the gunshot. The bullet, removed from Facio's head, became a crucial piece of evidence as authorities work to identify the shooter.
Facio's dream of becoming a doctor may have faced a perilous detour, but his spirit and survival have left his family, especially his relieved mother, feeling as if he has been given a second chance at life.
