Mohammed Shami said that he was hurt to see Mitchell Marsh keep his feet on the World Cup trophy after Australia's win on Sunday.

Australia won their sixth ODI World Cup title after beating India by six wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, which led to celebrations inside the former's dressing room.

Amidst the festivities, a photo of all rounder Mitchell Marsh sitting with his feet on the trophy went viral and led to outrage on social media.

On Thursday, another disapproving voice for the gesture came from Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who said that he was unhappy to see that Marsh had kept his feet on the World Cup trophy during the team's celebrations on Sunday.

"I am hurt. The trophy for which all the teams in the world fights, the trophy which you want to lift over your head, keeping a foot on that trophy did not make me happy," Shami told reporters on Thursday.

The 33-year-old emerged as India's leading wicket-taker in the tournament, claiming 24 scalps in seven matches which included a record-breaking spell of 7 for 57 against New Zealand in the semifinal in Mumbai.

When asked about not featuring in the playing XI for the first four matches of the tournament, Shami said that one needed mental strength to not get affected by being benched and added that a player needed to put the team's performance over personal performances.

"When you sit out for four matches, you need to be mentally strong. Sometimes you are under pressure but when you see the team performing well and going in a good direction, it gives you satisfaction," he added.

The paceman also broke the record for the most number of wickets take by an Indian pacer during the course of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
