The Pat Cummins-led Australian side broke a billion hearts when they beat hosts India in the 2023 ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad in November.
Expectedly, celebrations broke out inside the Australia dressing room after the win but even in the happiness a photo of all rounder Mitchell Marsh sitting with his feet on the ODI World Cup trophy drew criticism from social media users.
More than 10 days after the photo went viral on social media, Marsh reacted to the criticism and said that he had done nothing wrong and not put too much thought into it.
"There was obviously no disrespect meant in that photo at all. I haven’t given it too much thought, I haven’t seen a lot on social media even though everyone tells me it’s gone off. There’s nothing in that," Marsh told SEN Radio.
When asked if he would keep his feet on a trophy in future, Marsh said, "Yeah probably, to be honest".
Marsh's gesture was criticised by many, including Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami who said he was hurt by the all rounder's gesture.
"I am hurt. The trophy for which all the teams in the world fights, the trophy which you want to lift over your head, keeping a foot on that trophy did not make me happy," Shami had told reporters.
Marsh, along with other players from the World Cup winning squad such as Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood were rested for the five-match T20I series against India that followed the quadrennial event.
