Formula One's global television audience increased to 527 million viewers in 2010 with growth in nine out of the 11 largest markets, according to the official formula1.com website.

The figures for 2009, when there were only 17 races, were not given but had previously been put at 520 million.

There were 19 rounds last year, one of the closest-fought championships on record with an unprecedented four drivers still mathematically in the title chase at the final race in Abu Dhabi.

"It was a particularly strong year for Formula One's European audience, with many of FOM (Formula One Management)'s broadcast partners reporting their highest race audiences in a number of seasons," the website said.

The 2011 season will have an unprecedented 20 races with India making its debut after the arrival of a South Korean grand prix last year.

Formula One will be televised in high definition for the first time this year with FOM saying all their broadcast partners would be offering HD coverage of all sessions. The season starts in Bahrain on March 13.
