Covid-19 advisory: The Karnataka government is asking the elderly and vulnerable to wear masks in public

Anticipating a potential surge in Covid-19 cases due to the emergence of the JN.1 subvariant in the neighbouring states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the Karnataka government has issued an advisory asking the elderly and vulnerable to mask up. The state has also stepped up testing and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) of confirmed cases, according to Swarajya magazine.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday classified the JN.1 coronavirus strain as a "variant of interest", but said it did not pose much threat to public health. JN.1 was previously classified as a variant of interest as a part of its parent lineage BA.2.86.

On Tuesday, the Karnataka government circulated an advisory based on recommendations made by the state’s Covid-19 technical advisory committee. Here is what the Karnataka advisory to the general public entails:

The Karnataka government is urging individuals aged 60 and above, especially those with comorbidities (kidney, heart and liver ailments) to wear masks when outdoors.

Pregnant women and lactating mothers are also encouraged to wear masks when stepping out.

How does a vaccine work?

A vaccine works by mimicking a natural infection. A vaccine not only induces immune response to protect people from any future COVID-19 infection, but also helps quickly build herd immunity to put an end to the pandemic. Herd immunity occurs when a sufficient percentage of a population becomes immune to a disease, making the spread of disease from person to person unlikely. The good news is that SARS-CoV-2 virus has been fairly stable, which increases the viability of a vaccine.

How many types of vaccines are there?

There are broadly four types of vaccine — one, a vaccine based on the whole virus (this could be either inactivated, or an attenuated [weakened] virus vaccine); two, a non-replicating viral vector vaccine that uses a benign virus as vector that carries the antigen of SARS-CoV; three, nucleic-acid vaccines that have genetic material like DNA and RNA of antigens like spike protein given to a person, helping human cells decode genetic material and produce the vaccine; and four, protein subunit vaccine wherein the recombinant proteins of SARS-COV-2 along with an adjuvant (booster) is given as a vaccine.

What does it take to develop a vaccine of this kind?

Vaccine development is a long, complex process. Unlike drugs that are given to people with a diseased, vaccines are given to healthy people and also vulnerable sections such as children, pregnant women and the elderly. So rigorous tests are compulsory. History says that the fastest time it took to develop a vaccine is five years, but it usually takes double or sometimes triple that time.

They are strongly advised to avoid closed and poorly-ventilated spaces as well as crowded areas.

People experiencing respiratory ailments such as cough, cold, fever, and runny nose are advised to seek medical consultation at the earliest.

“When unwell, stay at home, and minimise contact with other people, especially seniors and those who are vulnerable. At crowded places, particularly, if not well-ventilated, wearing a mask is advised,” the advisory said.

“When travelling overseas, stay vigilant and adopt relevant travel precautions, such as wearing masks at the airport and inside aircraft, and avoiding crowded areas with poor ventilation,” it added.

Good personal hygiene maintenance including frequent hand washing, is necessary, the circular further said.
