A walk-in interview organised by an IT company in Pune has sparked a discussion on hiring practices of some of the biggest companies and the condition of the job market in the country. A video recorded outside what is believed to be Cognizant Hingewadi campus earlier in January showed hundreds of job seekers waiting in queue with copies of their resumes in hand and then clamouring to get in through the gates.
@job4software, the profile that shared the clip on Instagram, claimed that about 3,000 applicants had gathered to apply for the role of a junior developer. Moneycontrol could not independently verify this.
Commenting on the video, several social media users questioned the company's need for traditional walk-in interviews in today's digital age.
"So this is an 'IT' company that hasn’t figured out online interviews yet," wrote one user. "Are we living in 90s that they are conducting walk-in interviews? Do they not know anything about LinkedIn or whatever tools we have at our convenience? They are just fooling everyone," added another.
Some users also shared their experience of going through similar hiring processes.
"I recall interviewing at Naaptol in Rabale, Navi Mumbai as a fresher back in 2017. Candidates were required to be there at 8 am. I woke up in the middle of the night to catch the early morning train. I changed clothes in a public toilet, and I was the first person present even before the employees," wrote user Ajit Fawade. "When my batch finished our aptitude round and came down, we saw there was a huge crowd of around 2-3 thousand people around the building. They interviewed close to 6,000 people and selected 17, including me and my friend. The interview was quite challenging, but I was well-prepared, so I cleared it with full confidence."
