National Democratic Alliance candidate Venkaiah Naidu was elected as the next Vice-President of India on Saturday after a comprehensive victory over Opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi.
Over the course of a four-decade career, Naidu has made a name for himself on the political stage as an experienced Parliamentarian and active minister. But he is also known for his sense of humour, with his innovative wordplay known to induce fits of laughter.
His creative digs at opposition leaders in the Parliament and witty one-liners and acronyms praising the Modi-led government have led to the coining of terms such as "Venkaiahisms" and "Venkronyms". A parody Twitter handle expands his name as National Acronym Innovation & Design University (NAIDU).
Here's a round-up of some of his most memorable quotes:
# When there was speculation over Naidu being chosen as the NDA's pick for Vice-President, Venkaiah Naidu had told the media, "I neither want to become rashtrapati nor do I want to become uprashtrapati. I am happy being Usha's pati," referring to his spouse Usha.
# During the Presidential Elections held in June, Naidu had humourously dismissed the Congress' claim that the Presidential elections were a battle of ideology. Mentioning that the only ideology of the President is the Constitution of India, Naidu said, "We are united. They are divided. We are confident. They are diffident. We are marching forward. They are looking backwards. That is why their situation is awkward."
# In March last year, when Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and son Akhilesh Yadav were feuding, Naidu had said, "Dynasty in democracy is nasty, but tasty to some people."
# During a Lok Sabha speech in 2015, Naidu took a dig at Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge. He said, "Mr. Kharge ji, you spoke for 72 minutes, almost equivalent to your age," which even had Speaker Sumitra Mahajan giggling.
# Countering rival allegations of faulty electronic voting machines (EVM) in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh elections, Naidu had said,"EVM stands for Every Vote Modi."
# Praising Narendra Modi, Naidu had released a note in 2016 expanding the Prime Minister's surname to "Modi stands for Modifier of Developing India."
#In the same note, he said: "Modi is god’s gift for India. He is the messiah of the poor. He inherited challenges in each and every sector. He is steering clear of them."
# While addressing a group of students at Delhi's Shri Ram College of Commerce, Venkaiah Naidu came up with yet another catchy acronym for YOUNG. He said, "Young refers to You Owe U and Nation Greatness.'
# While delivering a speech at India Today Conclave 2017 in Mumbai, Naidu emphasized on the improvement of infrastructure in Indian cities by coining yet another acronym for city, which went: "City refers to Civic Infrastructure To You.'
# In a Facebook post, Naidu had encouraged investors to invest in the state of Jharkhand by writing a few lines of poetry. It read, "State is beautiful, People are dutiful, Resources are plentiful, Brand ambassador is powerful, Chief Minister is mindful, Prime Minister is helpful, What else is required, come and invest in Jharkhand."
