Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti commemorates the 17th-century Maratha warrior king's birth anniversary, marking his 394th year in 2024. Born in present-day Maharashtra's Ahmadnagar on February 19, 1630, Shivaji stands as a towering figure in Indian history.
Renowned for his valour, military genius and leadership, he founded the Maratha Empire and revolutionised warfare tactics with his pioneering "Ganimi Kava" or "Shiva Sutra" against the Mughals in 1645.
His guerrilla warfare tactics earned him the title of the father of guerrilla warfare in India and laid the groundwork for the Maratha empire's establishment.
From a young age, Shivaji displayed remarkable prowess. At just 15, he persuaded Inayat Khan, the commander of Bijapuri, to surrender the Torna Fort, marking the beginning of his conquests. His forces expanded the Maratha Empire, capturing and fortifying strategic locations with impressive structures that endure as testaments to his reign.

Chhatrapati Shivaji's legacy extends beyond military conquests. He is revered as one of India's bravest and most progressive rulers. Through masterful strategy, he won numerous battles against the mighty Mughal empire.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among those who paid tribute to the Maratha king on his birth anniversary.
"Tributes to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his Jayanti. A visionary leader, fearless warrior, protector of culture and embodiment of good governance, his life inspires generations," PM Modi posted on X.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray were among the politicians from Maharashtra who paid tributes.
