Bengaluru Police has started notifying companies if their employees violate traffic rules

If you are a working professional in Bengaluru guilty of violating traffic rules, you may soon have to explain the transgression to your boss. The Bengaluru Police has started the novel initiative to notifying companies about their employees’ traffic rule violations, reports Indian Express.

Under this initiative, Bengaluru Traffic Police officials have started flagging techies riding two-wheelers on the wrong side of the road. The police send a list of violations to each company, possibly trying to instil the fear of professional repercussions in offenders.

According to the Indian Express report, the drive was started 15 days ago and is currently underway across Bengaluru’s information technology corridor. The corridor houses prominent IT hubs like Sarjapur and Whitefield and falls under Mahadevapura traffic police division.

“We are just experimenting with this initiative to see if the riders become more conscious about the road safety and traffic rules,” explained Mahadevapura traffic police Inspector Ramesh R. “As part of the initiative, when we catch hold of a violator, we check his identification card to identify his company. The traffic department is in touch with the companies and tech parks falling under our division.”

Mahadevapura added that when a person is caught breaking traffic rules, a “list of violations by the riders” is sent to their employer on WhatsApp. “We also issue online challans, not spot fines for violations,” he said.

“We don’t send any personal information but we send the number of violations accounted for by a company’s employees,” the traffic police inspector said.

The idea behind the drive is to raise awareness about traffic safety rules. Bengaluru Traffic Police recommends that the company organise a day of raising awareness on traffic rules once notified about employees who break them.

“We also recommend they call over the police for a session on traffic rules. The initiative is just to ensure that people follow the law of the land. This way the employees will become more conscious about traffic rules and think before violating them,” Mahadevapura told Indian Express.
