KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is out with another prediction about Apple iPhones. According to him, the Apple devices coming this fall will not support 3D Touch.
Kuo, in his notes shared with investors which were picked up by Feng.com, says that Apple’s decision is because of the plans to change the components of its displays to make them lighter and less likely to break.
Kuo who has a history of being accurate about Apple’s plans said citing his sources in Apple’s supply chain, that the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone expected this fall will use a CGS (Cover Glass Sensor) process.
This implies that the touch sensor will be embedded with the protective cover which is there to guard the LCD underneath. Kuo further talks about another thin film sensor which will be included in the premium phones though he admitted that he didn’t know what that would be for.
The CGS display though is comparatively more durable and shock resistant, costs more and hence 3D touch will be dropped to compensate the costs.
Kuo predicted that none of the Apple iPhones launched in 2019, including the OLED ones, will have 3D touch feature.
Apple’s 3D touch feature which can detect the pressure applied by fingers on screen and display options associated with them was introduced in the iPhone 6s and since been the mainstay of the subsequent phones.
Apple, though, never incorporated the technology into the iPad.
Apple is expected to unveil three new iPhone models later this year which will have two OLED versions, with 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch displays, alongside a 6.1-inch LCD version.
The LCD version will be $200 (Rs 13,350 approx.) cheaper than the OLED counterparts, an analyst predicted.
