Apple iPhone 17e tipped to enter mass production soon as leaks hint at specs and pricing strategy

The iPhone 16e was notable for being Apple’s first smartphone to debut the company’s in-house modem. The iPhone 17e is expected to continue this approach, potentially adopting the newer C1X modem that Apple introduced with the iPhone Air.

  • iPhone 17e may enter mass production soon after CES ends on January 9
  • iPhone 17e tipped to feature 6.1-inch display, A19 chip, and MagSafe charging
  • Device expected to launch as Apple's budget flagship with upgraded front camera

Apple may already be gearing up for the next phase of its iPhone roadmap, with a new leak suggesting that the upcoming iPhone 17e is close to entering mass production. The device is expected to succeed the iPhone 16e and is likely to remain Apple’s most affordable gateway into its smartphone ecosystem while still supporting Apple Intelligence features.

According to a fresh leak shared by tipster Smart Pikachu on Weibo, the iPhone 17e is expected to move into production shortly after CES concludes. The Consumer Electronics Show is currently underway in Las Vegas and will wrap up on January 9, after which Apple’s supply chain is said to begin ramping up for the new model. While Apple has not officially acknowledged the device, the timing aligns with the company’s typical internal preparation cycle for mid-cycle or value-focused iPhone launches.

The same leak suggests that Apple is positioning the iPhone 17e as a budget flagship rather than a stripped-down entry model. The phone is tipped to feature a 6.1-inch display with Dynamic Island support, bringing it visually in line with Apple’s more premium offerings. However, it is not expected to feature a high refresh rate panel. While the standard iPhone 17 reportedly introduced a 120Hz display, Apple appears unlikely to extend that upgrade to the more affordable 17e, continuing its strategy of reserving certain features for higher-priced models.

iPhone 17e: Rumoured specs

On the performance front, the iPhone 17e is said to be powered by the A19 chipset, although in an underclocked configuration compared to the version used in the regular iPhone 17. This would allow Apple to maintain performance differentiation while still offering enough power to support Apple Intelligence features and future iOS updates.

Previous reports have indicated that the iPhone 17e could support MagSafe charging, a feature that would further narrow the gap between Apple’s entry-level and mainstream iPhones. The device is also expected to ship with slimmer bezels and run on iOS 26 out of the box, ensuring software parity with the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup.

Camera hardware is expected to follow a familiar pattern. Like its predecessor, the iPhone 17e is rumoured to feature a single rear camera sensor. However, the front camera could see a notable upgrade. Leaks suggest Apple may equip the phone with an 18MP Centre Stage front-facing camera, matching the selfie hardware used across other iPhone 17 models and improving video calling and content creation capabilities.

The iPhone 16e was notable for being Apple’s first smartphone to debut the company’s in-house modem. The iPhone 17e is expected to continue this approach, potentially adopting the newer C1X modem that Apple introduced with the iPhone Air. This would further reduce Apple’s reliance on third-party modem suppliers.

There is currently no concrete information about colour options. The lack of leaks in this area suggests Apple may once again limit the iPhone 17e to basic black and white finishes, similar to the iPhone 16e.

In India, the iPhone 16e launched at Rs. 59,900. The iPhone 17e is expected to be priced in a similar range, although factors such as memory chip shortages and ongoing tariff pressures could push Apple to slightly revise its pricing strategy.
