Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Shivamogga airport, with a lotus-shaped terminal in Karnataka on February 27. The well-equipped airport is situated on 662.38 acres of land and has a runway, terminal building, ATC tower, fire station, taxiway apron, apron, approach road, peripheral road and compound wall.
The event coincided with the 80th birthday of Karnataka BJP strongman and former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.
The new airport has been developed at a cost of around Rs 450 crore. The airport is expected to improve connectivity and accessibility of Shivamogga and other neighbouring areas in the Malnad region.
The prime minister will take a walk-through and inspect the newly built airport, after which he will inaugurate and lay the foundation of multiple projects in Shivamogga, according to the statement issued on Saturday.
The greenfield domestic airport at Sogane in Shivamogga district has been constructed under the Centre’s UDAN scheme. The scheme is aimed at making air travel affordable to all.
Modi was responding to the tweet threads of Shivamogga MP B Y Raghavendra, who shared a video of the airport and its terminal on his Twitter handle, saying the dream of an airport in Shivamogga has come true.
