The panel was ‘appalled’ that draft rules for the online sale of medicines had not been finalised till date.
The government has amended the provisions of operating an e-pharmacy in the draft of the New Drugs, Medical Devices and Cosmetics Bill, 2023. The bill has been sent for inter-ministerial discussions.
They allege that the practice of selling medicines online is wrong, as these online pharmacies threaten the very existence of retailers. Also, they say, the online pharmacies are selling medicines at less than production price.

The move towards regularising the sale of medicines through internet would increase the risk of adverse drug reaction and give an opening for the entry of low-quality, mis-branded and spurious products.
The AIOCD President said that they strongly oppose the government's move to regularise sale of medicines through internet that is 'e-Pharmacy' in larger public interest.
