Around 4,800 MLAs and MPs will cast their votes till 5 pm for the presidential election. The NDA's presidential candidate is Droupadi Murmu whereas the Opposition candidate is Yashwant Sinha.
Murmu will visit the state BJP office, and also meet Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during the tour
Droupadi Murmu, a tribal leader from Odisha and former governor of Jharkhand, had filed her nomination on Friday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi handing over her papers to Returning Officer PC Mody.
If Murmu who hails from Odisha is elected, political parties cannot ignore the tribal people when a member of the community is the President.
The names that immediately come to our mind include APJ Abdul Kalam, KR Narayanan, Pranab Mukherjee, R Venakataraman, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and even India's first President Rajendra Prasad
The development comes after NCP chief Sharad Pawar, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi declined to stand for the top job as Opposition's candidate.
The 84-year-old Abdullah is the second political person after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar to have withdrawn their names as probable opposition nominee for the July elections.
The meeting also made public that Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar was not keen on becoming a presidential candidate because he still wants to be ‘active’ in politics.
Of the 16 Rajya Sabha seats for which the voting was held on June 10, the BJP won eight and the Congress five. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Shiv Sena got one seat each while the BJP-JJP-backed media baron Kartikeya Sharma won one seat.
Poll for the President of India will be held on July 18, the Election Commission announced on Thursday
The term of the current President Ram Nath Kovind ends on July 24.
Though the BJP won four out of the five states which went to polls in February - March, it doesn’t guarantee a victory for its presidential candidate. Also, in the presidential elections, the winner is not the one who gets the maximum votes.
The BJP won in four out of five states that went to the polls in the last two months, yet it may still not have numbers to have the NDA candidate as the next President of India. Thus the saffron party is expected to bank on the YSRCP and BJD to secure a majority in the electoral college
Raut also claimed that by 2022, there will be enough numbers "on our side" to decide the presidential candidate.
