Tesla is officially in India. After years of speculation, the electric vehicle giant opened its first showroom in Mumbai on July 16, planting its flag inside the Maker Maxity Mall at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The 4,000 sq ft space is being billed as a Tesla Experience Centre, a sleek, high-voltage entry into one of the world’s fastest-growing car markets.

Where it’s located and why it matters
The BKC showroom sits in the heart of Mumbai’s financial district, rubbing shoulders with global luxury brands. The monthly rent? Rs 35 lakh. Not cheap, but it’s a calculated move. For now, Tesla isn’t setting up a manufacturing unit in India. Instead, this store acts as its first physical presence to test waters, spark buzz, and study consumer appetite.

Model Y takes the spotlight
What’s parked inside? The Tesla Model Y, an all-electric SUV that’s already gained global popularity. Six units have been imported from Shanghai, with two currently on display in Mumbai. The version headed for Indian garages is the refreshed Model Y, featuring a coupe-like silhouette, blacked-out alloys, and a futuristic dual-tone interior.

How much will it cost you?
Prices start at Rs 59.89 lakh for the Long Range RWD version. The AWD variant will cost more. Why so pricey? Blame the import taxes, India imposes 70 percent to 100 percent duty on fully built cars brought from abroad. These are CBUs (Completely Built Units), so the sticker shock is real.

You can book now, but...
If you’ve got the money, you can book today. But don’t expect the car in your driveway tomorrow. Deliveries begin in September 2025. Tesla will use the next few months to tie up logistics, finish regulatory work, and set up after-sales support. It's a soft launch, with a long fuse.

Where’s Tesla heading next?
Mumbai is just the start. Tesla plans to open its second showroom in New Delhi, followed by Gurugram. These three cities represent India’s most EV-ready markets, thanks to better infrastructure, higher spending power, and growing green consciousness.

Superchargers incoming: Fast, very fast
Tesla is also bringing its next-gen V4 Superchargers to India. The first four charging hubs are planned for Delhi, each hosting 16 high-speed chargers. The promise? A 267-km top-up in just 15 minutes. It’s Tesla’s answer to range anxiety, and a clear bet on EV adoption scaling up fast.

For now, Tesla’s first India showroom is all about showmanship, ambition, and early adopters. From imported Model Ys to high-speed chargers and premium pricing, the EV giant is sending a clear message: it’s here to stay, and it’s just getting started.
