A powerful accidental explosion ripped through Nowgam Police Station on the outskirts of Srinagar late Friday, killing nine people and injuring 27, mostly police and forensic personnel. CCTV footage captured the blast as FSL teams, police, and a Tehsildar inspected ammonium nitrate explosives seized from Faridabad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited the under-construction Antroli bullet train station in Surat to review progress on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR). Chaos near Nowgam police station as families rush to blast site

Tension and chaos unfolded near the Nowgam Police Station in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday as family members of those killed or injured in last night’s blast tried to access the cordoned-off area. Residents reported damage to nearby houses caused by the powerful explosion, while emergency teams rushed the injured to hospitals for treatment. Authorities have restricted access to the site as investigations and rescue operations continue.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed her grief over the Nowgam Police Station blast that killed nine people and injured several others.

“Deeply anguished by the tragic accidental blast at Nowgam Police Station that claimed 9 precious lives and left many injured. This heartbreaking incident lays bare the risks and difficult conditions under which our police personnel serve to keep the rest of us safe. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, and prayers for strength and swift recovery for the injured,” she wrote on X.

Mufti’s statement underscores the challenges and dangers police personnel face while performing their duties, especially in sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has called for an all-party meeting in the wake of the explosions near Delhi’s Red Fort and Jammu & Kashmir’s Nowgam Police Station, saying the incidents underscore the need for a united approach to counter rising terror threats.

Expressing grief over the deaths of nine people in the Nowgam blast and the injuries suffered by many others, Kharge emphasised the need for “swift medical care” and “adequate compensation” for the victims and their families.

He said the two blasts should serve as a warning for the Union government to strengthen intelligence gathering and anti-terror operations, adding that “terrorism continues to receive support from external forces.”

Tension and chaos were witnessed near the Nowgam Police Station on Saturday as families of those killed or injured in the accidental blast tried to enter the cordoned-off area. Visuals from the spot showed anxious relatives pleading with security personnel for access as authorities restricted movement around the blast site for safety and investigation.

Several houses in the vicinity suffered significant damage due to the powerful explosion, which ripped through the police station late Friday night. Residents were seen assessing shattered windows, damaged walls and debris scattered across the neighbourhood.

Officials said the injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals, where they are undergoing treatment. Security forces continue to maintain a tight perimeter around the area as forensic teams and investigators work on the site.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reviewed key sections of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, including the nearly completed 47-km Surat–Bilimora stretch. According to PIB, major civil works and track-bed installation on this section are almost done.

The upcoming Surat station, designed to reflect the city’s diamond heritage, will serve as a major transit hub connecting the Metro, Indian Railways, and local bus services. Ahead of Modi’s public rally for the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi visited villages to personally invite residents, visuals of which showed a warm welcome with flower showers.

The Prime Minister landed in Surat earlier in the day and proceeded to Antroli to inspect the bullet train station there. Visuals online showed his convoy heading from Surat International Airport towards the project site.

Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha said on Saturday that he was “deeply anguished by the loss of precious lives due to extremely tragic accidental blast at Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar”.

“My condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for speedy recovery of the injured,” he wrote on X.

“The government stand in solidarity with the families, friends, and loved ones of the departed. All possible assistance is being provided to those affected. I've ordered a probe to ascertain the cause of the accidental explosion,” he added.

Jammu and Kashmir DGP Nalin Prabhat said the Nowgam police station building has been “severely damaged” in the blast, with adjacent structures also affected.

“The extent of this damage is being ascertained. The cause of this unfortunate incident is being inquired into. J&K police stands in solidarity with the families of the deceased in this hour of grief...” he said.

Delhi ex-chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday termed the late-night explosion at Srinagar’s Nowgam Police Station as “extremely heartbreaking and alarming”.

In a strongly worded post on X, Kejriwal wrote, “The news of the bomb blast at a police station in Srinagar late at night is extremely heartbreaking and alarming. Several brave police personnel have been martyred and many are injured. May the Almighty grant strength to the families of the martyrs to bear this unbearable sorrow and grant speedy recovery to the injured. My condolences are with the affected families.

“But this question to the government is essential… What on earth is happening in the country? The echoes of the Delhi blast had not even subsided, and the country has been shaken by another blast. What exactly are the government, security agencies, intelligence apparatus, and the Home Minister doing? How and why is such a massive compromise with the country's security being allowed? The country demands answers.”

“The material in the police station was being handled by the FSL team,” said the Joint Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir. “The cause of the blast is under investigation. The recovered material had been stored in an open area within the police station premises,” he further added.

J&K DGP Prabhat said the FSL team had been taking samples of explosives recovered from Faridabad for two days when the accidental blast occurred at 11.20 pm. He said the material was highly sensitive and unstable, despite being handled with extreme caution.

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of J&K Police Nalin Prabhat said the Nowgam explosion was accidental, adding that “blast accidental no other cause behind it.” He said “those injured reciving treatment” and confirmed that a “team was handling the material inside the police station” when the incident occurred.

He also urged the public and media to refrain from rumours, stating that “unnecasry spectulating over blast must not be made.”
