An encounter is underway between security forces and terrorists in the Akhal area of Kulgam district in Jammu and Kashmir. One terrorist has been killed so far, the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps said on Saturday.

The joint operation is being carried out by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police's Special Operations Group (SOG), and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

In a post on X, Chinar Corps said, “Operation Akhal, Kulgam. One terrorist has been neutralised by the security forces so far. Operation continues.”

Security forces launched a search operation in the forest area of Akhal on Friday after receiving specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists. The operation escalated into an encounter when the terrorists opened fire on the forces.

"An intermittent and intense firefight continued throughout the night. Alert troops responded with calibrated fire and tightened the noose while maintaining contact. So far, one terrorist has been neutralised by the security forces. The operation in Akhal is ongoing," the Army's Chinar Corps stated in a post on X.
