As the Congress government in Telangana marks its first year in office with the “Telangana Rising” campaign, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has prioritised Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the state’s future.
The state government wants to make Hyderabad India’s AI capital. To achieve this, they plan to create a 200-acre AI City.
The project aims to boost Telangana’s economy, education and governance through partnerships and collaborations. The goal is to promote sustainable innovation and establish technological leadership.
The government said that AI City will be a centre for new technology and innovation which hopes to attract large companies, research institutes and startups worldwide.
It is hoping that with advanced computing resources, data storage, and fast internet, the AI City will draw significant investments. This will help Telangana become a leader in AI research and development.
The government’s strategy has strengthened with 26 partnerships, called Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), signed with important companies like Microsoft, Nvidia, AWS, and various academic institutions, startups, and non-profit organisations.
These MoUs focus on seven main areas: computing infrastructure, centres of excellence, skills development, impact assessment, startup innovation, generative AI, and data annotation.
Telangana's IT Minister, Duddila Sridhar Babu, emphasised that “Telangana is determined to lead the global AI revolution. AI City will provide the infrastructure and opportunities for innovation, ensuring that Hyderabad becomes a beacon for talent, investment, and transformative technologies.”
Meta, the Mark Zuckerberg-owned social media giant, has started a two-year partnership with the Telangana government to promote innovation using artificial intelligence (AI). This project supports Telangana’s goal to improve e-governance. Meta will provide its open-source Generative AI technologies, including the new Llama 3.1 model. These tools will help deliver public services more effectively, boost government efficiency, and address local needs by providing AI-based solutions for better governance.
Meta’s approach to AI fits Telangana’s objectives well. The Llama model has been downloaded over 350 million times worldwide and used by companies like AT&T, Goldman Sachs, Infosys, and Spotify. Using Meta’s advanced AI tools, Telangana aims to improve citizen services, enhance e-governance, and create economic opportunities.
The government has a new plan to include AI education in schools, aiming to reach 5,000 schools by 2027. This plan will train 20,000 teachers and help 500,000 students by providing AI kits, teacher training, and clear learning structures. Political analyst Rajesh Karanam said, “This initiative is a game-changer. By introducing AI education early, Telangana is building a tech-savvy workforce that can adapt to global challenges.”
Telangana’s AI roadmap also plans to provide AI services to over 10 million citizens by 2027. It will focus on healthcare, agriculture, and transportation. AI officers will be appointed in government departments to help with the implementation. Furthermore, launching the Telangana Data Exchange Platform (TGDex) will give startups and developers access to quality datasets, encouraging innovation and improving efficiency.
The state plans to create data annotation hubs to meet AI needs at the national level and improve the quality of AI models. These hubs will generate jobs and skill-building opportunities, making Telangana a leader in data services.
As ethical governance is a priority, Telangana is committed to developing AI responsibly. It introduces measures to prevent deepfakes and misinformation driven by AI, ensuring that innovation is safe and inclusive. The state also seeks input on AI policies from experts worldwide and the public to promote transparency and accountability.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasised the government’s vision: “Hyderabad is ready to lead the AI era. While India missed previous industrial revolutions, Telangana will adopt AI and set global standards for innovation and economic growth.”
Telangana has teamed up with the World Trade Centre in Shamshabad to quickly provide 200,000 square feet of office space for companies focused on AI. This will help them start their work as the AI City develops.
Telangana’s AI projects support its goal of becoming a $3 trillion economy. The state aims to attract investments, build advanced infrastructure, and create a skilled workforce. These efforts will strengthen Hyderabad’s role as an innovation, opportunity, and sustainable growth centre.
