The Indian Army has issued a tender for the procurement of 400 howitzers in a move to enhance its artillery capabilities with indigenously developed technology. The tender, issued on August 16, seeks to acquire 155 mm/52 calibre Towed Gun Systems (TAGS) from Indian firms, marking a major step in the Army's plan to modernise its artillery regiment.
According to senior military officials quoted by ANI, the tender falls under the 'Buy Indian-IDDM' category, highlighting the government's push for indigenous design, development, and manufacturing.
"A tender for buying 400, 155-mm 52-calibre towed artillery gun systems (TAGS) along with towing vehicles from Indian firms under the Buy Indian-IDDM category has been issued," the news agency reported quoting senior military officials.
The tender has been sent to Indian defence manufacturers, including Bharat Forge, Larsen and Toubro, Adani Group, and the Ordnance Factory Board, ANI reported, attributing the statement to senior military officials.
The Indian Army’s Artillery Regiment is specifically looking for a gun system that is lighter and more versatile, capable of being deployed in challenging terrains, particularly in high-altitude areas. The procurement process is expected to be completed by 2042.
